Africa was certified free of wild poliovirus

The independent Africa Regional Certification Commission certified the WHO African Region free of wild poliovirus in 2020.

The milestone followed decades of vaccination and surveillance. Vaccine-derived poliovirus still requires ongoing work, so the achievement is significant but not the end of polio response.

OUR METHOD

Good news without the sugar coating.

Primary sources first. Every starter story links to the institution responsible for documenting the milestone.

Context stays attached. Progress does not mean a problem is over, so each note says what remains.

No synthetic news photos. The atlas is graphic by design; reported events should never be illustrated with invented evidence.
